Lamu water desalination plant
120,000 m³/day desalination plant under BOT with mineral recovery.
The Lamu water desalination plant is a USD 816 million public–private partnership (PPP) project developed under a 30-year build–operate–transfer (BOT) model between the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation and Rasli Bahari Kenya Ltd. Located in Lamu County, the plant will produce 120,000 cubic meters of potable water per day to serve Lamu Town, the LAPSSET Corridor, and surrounding communities. The project also includes mineral recovery and product commercialization components to maximize by-product value and enhance sustainability.
The feasibility study was completed in August 2024, confirming technical and financial viability, and the project is now advancing toward financial close. Once operational, it will strengthen water security, support industrial and port development under LAPSSET, and drive inclusive economic growth across coastal Kenya.
