High grand falls dam

Mega-dam generating 500–700 MW and irrigating 400,000 ha.

The High Grand Falls Dam (HGF), located along the Tana River, is a USD 1.2 billion multipurpose mega-project designed to transform Kenya’s water, power, and irrigation landscape. The dam will stand 115 metres high and extend 2.5 km in length, with a storage capacity of 5 billion m³, making it one of Africa’s largest. The project will initially install 500 MW of hydropower capacity, expandable to 700 MW, while supporting irrigation across more than 400,000 hectares, as well as domestic and industrial water supply and flood management.

Construction materials, including 3 million m³ of concrete and 18 million m³ of rockfill and clay, will largely be sourced locally. Once complete, the project will enable higher power generation, long-term drought resilience, and expanded agricultural productivity across eastern Kenya.
